Digital or traditional print: what changes for you?
Digital printing works like a large inkjet printer for cloth. The design is stored as a digital file and printed straight onto the fabric, so there are no separate screens for each colour. That allows complex artwork, gradients, photo-like effects and large all-over or border designs that are hard to do with screen or block printing.
For you this means sharper detail and a wider colour range, and often a design that looks painted. Traditional printed suits can look more handcrafted and are often simpler. Neither is better in every way, so choose by design, base fabric and budget. A digital print is still a surface print: it is not stitched like embroidery or woven like jacquard.
How to read a digital print listing
Look for digital, digitally printed or all-over print in the title, and check which pieces carry it, since a printed dupatta and trouser add to the price. Zoom in on the photos: a good print has sharp edges, smooth gradients and even colour, while a cheap one can look blurry, grainy or washed out.
Colour is the main risk. Digital prints can look brighter on screen than on cloth, so look for a daylight photo and compare it with the product shot. Deep shades and busy artwork hide marks and suit daily wear, while pale prints show stains more easily. For a quieter look, pair a digital-print shirt with a plain trouser.
Border panels, centre motifs and the tailor
Digital prints often include a printed border or a central panel, and these need planning. Ask your tailor to lay out the cut before they start, so large motifs line up at the seams and the front is balanced. This may need extra fabric, so check the metres supplied. If the colour differs from the photo, check the brand's return policy before you send the cloth for stitching. For summer cloth, see lawn digital print.
Caring for digital prints
Wash inside out in cool water with a mild detergent, keeping dark and bright colours separate at first. Avoid soaking, bleach and harsh scrubbing, which can dull the surface. Dry in the shade, because direct sun fades vivid colours, and iron on the reverse. Follow the brand's care label, since the base fabric differs between sets.
