Count back from Eid day: the timing rule

Eid dates depend on moon sighting, so treat any date as expected, and keep a buffer. Then count backwards.

• Unstitched: delivery time, plus tailoring, plus one fitting and one alteration. If you cannot fit all four, do not choose unstitched.
• Ready to wear: delivery time, plus an exchange window in case the size is wrong.
• From abroad: add the brand's international delivery and any customs time.

Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha: what changes

The two Eids call for different dressing, and the Islamic calendar moves about ten to eleven days earlier each year, so the weather at Eid changes as the years pass.

Eid ul Fitr follows Ramzan and is usually the more dressed-up of the two, with new outfits, brighter colours and a full day of visits. Eid ul Adha includes the qurbani, so many families choose easy-wash outfits in colours that hide marks, and keep a second outfit for the evening.

Choose fabric for the weather in your city, not the name of the Eid. Summer and winter show what suits each. Many people keep a lighter outfit for the morning and a dressier one for visits.

The Eid day plan: chand raat, morning, visits and evening

Plan the day in parts rather than as one outfit.

• Chand raat: a comfortable, colourful outfit for shopping, henna and bangles. Pieces that brands tag chand raat appear on this page.
• Eid morning: a clean, easy outfit for prayer and the first visits.
• Main visits: the dressier suit, ideally in a colour that photographs well in daylight.
• Evening: a lighter second outfit that is easy to sit and eat in.

Keep the dupatta light so it does not slip during greetings, and wear shoes you can stand in for hours. If you want one outfit to cover two parts of the day, choose a rich or neutral base and change the dupatta. Browse dupattas, bags and shoes.

Fabric and colour for the Eid you have

In warm weather, festive lawn and fine cotton keep the outfit light, and lined chiffon or organza carries embroidery without heat. In cold weather, heavier fabrics and a shawl add warmth. See chiffon, organza, jacquard and lawn.

Colour is personal, but pastels such as mint, peach and soft pink suit warm, daytime Eids, jewel tones such as emerald and maroon suit richer outfits, and gold or silver work adds sparkle without a loud shade. Compare shades on green, pink and maroon, and check photos in daylight.

Budget the whole family, not one dress

Eid spending covers more than one outfit. Add stitching if the suit is unstitched, plus shoes, a bag, jewelry and children's outfits.

For children, buy by measurement rather than age and leave room to grow, since brand sizing differs. Easy-wash fabrics suit a busy day. See kids and check each brand's chart.

Eid outfits from abroad

Order earlier than you would at home. Each brand sets its own shipping and customs, shown on its own site, and prices here are in rupees only, so convert with care and add delivery and any import charges. We do not know which brands ship to which country, so confirm before you choose a piece.
